As part of our ongoing Kiosk concept store, we’ll be brining you a series of Mini Stories, shedding a spotlight on the independent, ethical and sustainable brands taking residency within our concept space in Quayside, Media City and the creators that brought it to life. Today, we’re shedding a spotlight on the artist who designed our huge wall mural in Kiosk …

Martene spray painting the mural at the back of Kiosk.

I am an artist and photographer from Manchester. I make abstract paintings and murals as well as working as an architectural photographer.

The purpose behind what I do is to create bright and bold works which make a space come alive and to keep my creative juices flowing!

Throughout my late Teens and twenties I was a graffiti artist, creating solely graffiti lettering on walls and trains. I travelled extensively in Europe painting and meeting other graffiti writers and during this time I completed a degree in photography at the Edinburgh College of Art. My photography work was mostly inspired by the urban environment which led to my work as an architectural photographer. Over the years my graffiti career landed me in hot water on a number of occasions so when I started a family as I hit 30 it was time to stop!

The abstract work I do today is informed by both my work as a graffiti writer and a photographer. The shapes and forms I create throughout my work are taken from both graffiti lettering and architectural forms. I then add bold and bright colours to make as strong an impact as possible.

I am currently based in Salford and created a large mural in the Kiosk for MFM and we’ve talked about exhibiting some of my smaller paintings there in the future.

Sustainability to me is creating things that stand the test of time and don’t end up in landfill after a short use. With fashion and everything else really. If we can make great quality things that last, it makes a huge difference. It’s also about buying less in the first place. Quality over quantity.

You can see my work in Kiosk, Quayside Media City!
